Diffuse IR Floodlight

Recommended Posts

I am looking for some ideas on how to diffuse an IR floodlight. I installed it out front to give me more illumination than the factory lights from the IR cameras I use, but the IR Flood is too concentrated. So I was hoping I could get a couple of ideas.

My first thought was to put some window tint over it to reduce the intensity of the center of the flood, but there might be other ways, like a splitter that could redirect each side of the light off to the side or something. Plus I am not sure how well window tint would work on IR. Any suggestions? This is what the flood looks like now.

I'm a newbee to all this. I also added a illuminator to brighten a dark area. It did but the illuminator had a flashlight beam not wide. I did research and found I needed to add something to diffuse or spread out the light.

I doubt this would work, haven't bought any to try it yet. But if I took a piece of the clear wax paper, wadded it up to make allot of different angled surfaces, then taped it on the illuminator. Do you think this would work? Being wadded up it would diffuse the light but would enough light shine thru the paper?

Here's a diffuser for a flash on a camera, may work

Or maybe this, its a camera diffuser lens

I got the diffuser material and tried it. Here is the video of me adding the diffuser to the front of the IR light. I stuck it right to the IR Flood, I think it would have better results if I could extend it out, but I will have to find a means of doing that. For now I think it made a bit of a difference as it is and will leave it while I see if I can figure out how to get it an inch or so away from the light.
