RG59 VS RG6 (long run)

Recommended Posts

Have a run of 640 feet. I`ve used rg59 with power twice, each lasting about a year, direct burial in conduit. Do I need rg6 for this long run?

That's what I thought and have read. I`m either going with the rg6 or cat 6 this time(3rd) and hopes it last more than a year.

Are you using quality cable?

Don`t know brand name, rg59 Siamese with copper braid. About $250 per 1000`. What would be a good brand in rg6 Siamese or cat 6? Thanks.....

Not sure about rg59, havent touched that in a long time..but if you use ethernet, NEVER user copper clad aluminum or CCA cable-its brittle and doesnt conduct well..buy from a trusted source not ebay...

something like this http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10233&cs_id=1023305&p_id=12728&seq=1&format=2

Not sure if they have cat6 though... if a 1000 foot roll is under 150 then you should be VERY suspicious that its CCA. But dont assume its not CCA just because the price is high...you may be getting ripped off.

I'll say for the millionth time - RG6 is NOT designed for CCTV , it has poor noise immunity properties at CCTV baseband frequencies and certainly if it is buried I wouldm't be taking the chance of you having to replace it when you find it less than ideal.

Pure copper RG59u with >90% shielding will see you good

if you are using coax your problem may be moisture getting into the cable and once that happens it will wick through the braid and wreck the cable. I would look at running a underground or outdoor rated cable and you may end up running a separate power cable as I am not sure you can get the weather proof combo cable. If you do have to run a separate power cable I would look at going a little bigger as you may be getting some voltage drop. Even if you are running through conduit there is a good possibility that you have moisture in the conduit
