Kailef 0 Posted July 30, 2015 This is sort of an odd question. I have a certain health condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis. I have a totally fused neck so I have no movement whatsoever with my head. I can't look left or right, nor look up or down. I've tried these small cameras, for example those on Amazon, that might be considered "fender" cameras. They don't work too well. Then it had me thinking. I have a security camera system at home and they work great. My question is, is it possible to install a DVR and some of these security cameras on a vehicle and wire it to say the ignition on a car? I was thinking perhaps some dome cameras or something...whether they be BNC or HD-SDI or something else. I know it might make my 2011 toyota camry look silly, but I'll attach a picture of my monitor showing the cameras with my current set up. It's not working too great, and I need to do what I can to make sure not only myself is safe on the highway, but other drivers and pedestrians and if a CCTV security system can be done, then I would be willing to try that. Anyway, below is the picture of my current setup(as you can tell, you can see left and right in the top two cameras and blind spots on the bottom two). So if someone knows if it's possible(voltage wise or wiring wise) to hook up a DVR with security cameras on a car, it would be appreciated.
ssnapier 0 Posted August 1, 2015 Since most analog cameras have a 12 VDC option for power that should not be an issue. What are you goals for these cameras? If it is just visibility around the car my suggestion would be one on each mirror and one or two in the back. I think a nice wide angle camera mounted in the center of the rear bumper (or may be the license plate) would cover it. Can you provide a bit more detail on the cameras you are currently using? Also, why would you need a DVR? Are you recording these for security purposes or are you just looking for a way to bring the images to a single monitor? Kailef 0 Posted August 1, 2015 These are the cameras I'm using now: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BCVE3KY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00 They are flush mount cameras and were installed in the side front fenders to see left and right. My goals for the cameras are to see left and right. With my AS condition, I am unable to turn my head the slightest bit to the left or right, or up and down at all. I'm not sure if you've heard of Mick Mars from Motley Crue, but he has the same condition. I have a fused neck. When I am at stop signs, I am unable to look left and right to see if there is oncoming traffic. I tried using those rounded mirrors like 18-wheelers use, but I almost got into a wreck when a Driver Rehab Specialist from Easter Seals was training me to use those. I didn't feel completey safe using those mirrors and I felt other drivers wouldn't be safe either. So I decided to go with a camera system. I came across this website with this camera system: http://www.unisee.be/unisee-800B.html That camera system is meant for commercial trucks and perhaps buses. I think it's overkill for me in a car. Right now, I have it set up by having 2 flush mount cameras in my front left and right fenders to help see left and right, but either the cameras are not all that great or I need them higher up(as right now they're in the middle part of my left and right fenders. I'm thinking either better cameras or different cameras that can sit and mount on the top edge of the fenders next to the hood. I also have 2 cameras mounted underneath my side mirrors to help see blind spots. I can see the driver side mirror, but not the passenger. I did, however, get one of those 18" extra wide rear-view mirrors, which has helped tremendously. I can practically see cars passing or on my sides in that mirror up until they reach the passenger front door. So I'm thinking my camera setup should be different. I am posting 2 more pics. The first picture is how I have it setup(2 cameras in front and 2 on the side mirrors). The second picture is how I'm thinking it needs to be setup, because while I intend not to get in a parking position where I have to backup(while I do have a backup camera, I still can't see left and right behind me...the thing is I may not always to avoid getting in a parking position like that. So I'm thinking my set up needs to be 2 in the front looking left and right, and 2 in the back looking left and right. My backup camera is hooked into my new stereo that I bought, so I don't need to worry about that. I'm thinking perhaps those flat mounted dome cameras that can be used outdoor might work, if they're small enough to be mounted on the top fenders or something. Though, they may be too big. I honestly don't know what to do. But anyway, any suggestions is appreciated. I did come across www.seeingissafety.com also, which apparently installs camera systems into police cruisers and such, but I don't know of them.
ssnapier 0 Posted August 2, 2015 Are you using the DVR just to provide the layout? If you don't want to bother with recording, you could do the same thing with a multiplexer or quad splitter. If you are happy with the images from these cameras, I see nothing wrong with them. How is the night vision? That seems like it would be the toughest challenge for something like this. Also, how is the image in rain, fog or snow?
Kailef 0 Posted August 2, 2015 I don't need a DVR, but the quality on the cameras are not that great. I tinted my all my windows as dark as the legal limit would allow, because it was putting a glare on the screen, which helped seeing the monitor. I can see a car oncoming about half a block away. If they're going 35 mph in town, that's going to be going too fast for me to pull out safely. I would put myself and the other driver in danger. I need to be able to see clearly traffic a block away so I know it's safe to pull out. I just ordered some different cameras, hoping they will be better. I just ordered 2 of these: http://smile.amazon.com/EC170-07-Definition-Waterproof-Vechile-Viewing/dp/B00EHD8J6S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1438534930&sr=8-1&keywords=esky+camera 2 of those without the guidelines...I'm hoping they'll be better quality and maybe mounting them somewhere else, perhaps higher at the top edge of the fender(assuming next to hood won't cut the wire if I mount there) will be better. The night vision I have on those are ok. Not the greatest though. We don't get much fog. I've driven in the rain just fine. Haven't had them out in the snow yet. I don't drive on snow anyway. A frosting on the road maybe, but if you're talking inches of snow, I wouldn't drive on that way. I haven't driven alone yet because I don't feel myself or others are safe. I've tried getting used to these cameras, but I'm just not seeing to the left and right far enough to know if it's clear to turn. I need either better cameras(which I just bought 2 hoping they'll be better), or I need them up higher. I use a security at home and they're mounted underneath my roof edges, but they're BNC cameras and I know I can see traffic coming from 2 blocks away easily. tomcctv 190 Posted August 2, 2015 The Amazon link is just cheap crap. DONT get caught by High def they are useless for what you want to do. Your going to be asking the camera to judge the distance of another car or motorbike which your not going to do with mini cameras ..... First your monitor in your car is going to have to be big. One of these fitted to roof of your car will work .... Bosh metal mic and a joy stick for you to control You will have 360 view and will see 1/2 a mile for you. badmop 0 Posted August 2, 2015 Sorry to hear about your situation, also for power, the "optima yellow top" car batteries are great deep cycle batteries. Not cheap but not really expensive, I run one in my everyday car. They are great batteries and would be helpful in this equation too I feel. Goodluck with the system! Info: http://www.autozone.com/miscellaneous-non-automotive/specialty-automotive-battery/optima-yellowtop-battery/467601_0_0/ Also, with your window tint, I believe you can get a doctors note for "darker window tint" Some have had it because of bright sun and eye issues. Just throwing that out there if it would help reduce the glare even more. (As you can install window tint on top of other window tint)

How much are we talking for one of those cameras? I see that it rotates and that sounds like a great idea, but am I seeing only one direction as it turns? It only has one camera on it so I would need to rotate it left and then right to see if it's clear...but by the time I see right, something might come from the left. How much are these cameras? I'm thinking I need to be able to see left and right at the same time so I can definitely make the right call when it's clear. Wouldn't it be best to just have stand-still cameras? I really don't need to see 360 degrees, although it might come in handy when backing up, but I've avoided backing up for the most part. My major concern is seeing left and right at stop signs because I honestly don't leave town that much. and thanks Badmop for that battery link. I'll keep that in mind because I'm thinking I need a better battery then the standard one Toyota gave me at the dealership for my 2011 Camry.

While it has no DVR, it does have the BNC inputs. If i were to get a monitor(that one or a different with bnc input), would that battery you linked be powerful enough to keep my car going, plus run this or another monitor and 2 BNC cameras? badmop 0 Posted August 8, 2015 I'll tell you this story from around 2002 of how great an Optima Yellow Top battery really is... Back in 2002 or so I was building a vehicle with a v8 350 engine, I had a yellow top battery for it. I had mistakenly hooked up the alternator incorrectly, so it was not charging the battery. I had (2) 10 inch subwoofers with an 800watt amp, also the starter for that vehicle was a more powerful after market starter. I had went 2 weeks, give or take a day starting that vehicle and running the audio system every day for about 2 weeks, until one day getting gas the vehicle would not start again. I got a jump from someone, went home figured out the issue of the alternator, charged the battery. Sadly, the battery died completely about 7 years later. Well worth the money. So the yellow top started my vehicle daily for 2 weeks, while running an audio system. I'd imagine you'd have no problems at all! Goodluck *edit, you may not need a bigger battery, but I was just originally throwing out the suggestion. It's a good backup just in case. I don't know what kind of weather you get, especially in winters. But you don't have to be worried about getting stuck somewhere because of a dead battery. Kailef 0 Posted August 8, 2015 I did buy a few Esky mini-cams that I'm hoping will work. These weren't that expensive. I had already bought these a week or two ago. I'm hoping to try them out this weekend. The reviews are great, even though people say to steer clear of Amazon. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H3ZN3JK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00 I did find a 7" LCD monitor on Newegg that has 1 BNC Input. I was thinking of buying 2 of those monitors and perhaps get some nice dome cameras to mount to the sides since they mount flat against walls. I could mount them to my side fenders at the front part of it. I could have left view on one monitor and right view on the other monitor. This whole time I think I've confused power of the battery based on volts since car batteries are roughly 12 volts. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's the amps I have to consider right? Most of these dome cameras show power consumption at 1A or less. The monitor I found on newegg ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2RU1NT6350&cm_re=bnc_monitor-_-9SIA2RU1NT6350-_-Product ) requires 1.5A. So please correct me I'm wrong, but running 2 dome cameras and 2 monitors should be just fine on a car battery right? Maybe this is the wrong place to ask. I don't know. Perhaps I should consult with an electrician or something. I dunno.
