Starting a simple system.

Recommended Posts

I put up a trail cam and saw activity that indicated I need some surveillance. I'm in the US. I'm handicapped and on fixed income because of it. So I need smart and cheap. I want a camera and a software system to use on my old 3.2mhz Home Theater PC and monitor. I have read about Hikvision and am thinking of starting with just one camera and something like Blue Iris. Then adding another later. I'm thinking of this camera.

Hikvision DS-2CD2032F-IW 1/3" CMOS 3MP IR Fixed Focal Lens Bullet Camera HD Waterproof Cctv Network Security Camera System WIFI POE IP Night Vision Camera 4MM with Build-in SD Card Slot.

I already have Christmas light power out there, so I can plug a power adapter in? It doesn't come with a power adapter. If can what one should I buy? What specs? It also has POE, from what I understand. Will that require I bypass the wifi and connect something all the way to the router or can I just plug in A POE injector and only use the power side?

I am here most of the time and bed ridden, I just want to know more about wht is going on in my yard.

It can operate over poe OR wifi ..with wifi you will need to power the camera with a local 12v connection...wifi is asking for trouble...It is also unlikely that you will be able to run the hikvision software on that old pc....you also dont want to run that old pc 24/7 because its a power hog...

That particular camera does have an SD card slot that you can record to instead of the pc...

Not the the camera is likely a china region camera and you will brick it if you attempt to upgrade the firmware.

How many cameras do you intend to install and what is your budget?

I am home nearly all the time and plan on being able to see the monitor all the time. I should know quickly if the wifi disconnects or whatever the problems are. I guess I could run the ethernet, but it would just be on the floor and I would be running over it with the wheelchair. I feel like I have enough spare ethernet and hard drives and computers to get going. I mainly want to see the yard and make sure I am not walking out into a mess. The first day I put up a trail came, someone walked to my door and then kept going. Five minutes later two policemen with drawn guns walked in front of the camera. The police came and looked at the video, but they had little info for me. They saw a part where I drove up the ramp, in my wheelchair and he asked if I always cary a drawn gun. I explained that was the top of my cane and that I had to hold it to my chest to keep it from hitting the rails of the ramp, but it did look just like I was holding a pistol. I was hoping to get by with a camera and software to start with. I have been waiting on disability for 6 years and once it is straightened out I will put some money into a better system.

I have an I7 desktop I built myself, but I didn't want to tie it up.

If you recommend a different camera or system could you just point me in the right direction. Worst case I'll just connect a webcam and set it in the window and just make sure it is clear when I leave.
