Installing IP cameras over 20-30 stores

Recommended Posts

Hello

Our company will soon offer Video Surveillance Installation as one of its services, and I am supposed to figure out how to do it. I have never done this before.

Basically, we plan on installing over 20 to 30 convenience stores, between 4 to 8 IP cameras (indoor) per store. The idea is that our company will be the only one who has access to the recordings (on our server), whereas the store manager will only have access to the real time video stream.

We won't be monitoring their cameras, we will just be storing the videos (one month) in case they ask us some recent footage of robberies etc.

-------

My questions are:

1) What equipment is needed in each store ? ---> cameras + NVR + PoE switch + PC / TV Monitor ?

2) Do each store need an NVR ? Estimation of the costs range of the equipment per store ?

3) Which range of server is able to store such amount of video footage coming from 30 stores ? (Let's assume we go for a 20 fps + H.264 format + 720 resolution per camera)

4) Does this sound like an overall bad idea to you ? Would it be more simple / profitable to simply install a CCTV system in each store, and let them deal with their NVR to access recordings (local storage), instead of hosting it ourselves on a dedicated server ?

Thank you for your replies in advance.

Good luck with that setup. Your customers must have a fat upload pipe with unlimited data for this to work. Not to mention your head office will need a huge download pipe for all 20-30 locations to stream to.

Why is this type of business starting .......we had to talk a customer out of having a system fitted ..... And customers need to be educated against companies like this .

First how can you sell a system were only your company has the footage .......how much are you going to charge for footage needed if something happend

How are you going to protect your customer if something goes wrong with either your server or data feed to you ......

To be honest I wasn't convinced it was a good idea, but since I don't know much about CCTV, I had to ask to be sure.

So basically we're better off just charging these stores to install their cameras and that's it ? The rest would be up to them.

1) Yes, the cams, NVR, monitor are the start. A POE switch if you're running power using that method (some NVR's have POE plugs right on them).

2) Probably simplest and cheapest to run an NVR at each store

3) If you capture continuous video 24/7, at your specs, that's 11.5TB per store (of 8 cams).

Tidbit 1 - back off to 15fps, still totally viewable

Tidbit 2 - some businessses (ok, many...and especially retail)...are good with recording motion only (ie...recording "activities"). Then you'd be good for about 4TB of storage for a month...even at 1080P (2 megapixel).

Tidbit 3 - 1080P - 2 megapixel...they'll really like the picture quality (3 or 4MP they can zoom in the picture better to see what a person has in their hand, better facial recognition, etc.).

4) Depends on your business model

* store NVR - local storage

1 or 2 of the 4TB drives, they keep it.

In this scenario, you make money on the equipment and install as well as possibly some type of service going forward.

* All video hosted by you

Whether you do 24/7 (11.5TB x 30 stores) or motion only (say 4TB)...figure on doubling that as since you're taking on the responsiblity of keeping the data safe yourself as a paid service, it'll likely be expected that you'll have backups in case a drive goes bad (and they do sometimes). So 8TB - 24TB per store. And methods for:

- regular uploads of the video to you from each store

- your servers automatically backup the video (not difficult, but added expense and effort)

In this scenario, you'll make money off the monthly (or whatever) periodic fees for storing/hosting the video.

Plus a method for you to retrieve the right video when asked (if they're recording continuous 24/7, then it'll be more...eh...time consuming for you).

A hybrid business model might be to have the video stored locally at each store, but a mid-range monthly fee for you to fully service whatever they need such as video retrieval, periodic checkups, etc.
