Junction Boxes to Incorporate RJ45 Camera Tails

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I have just purchased a Swann 1080P POE NVR 8 channel IP kit with 4 cameras to install on my home. However whilst undertaking the planning stage and wanting to make a neat installation my plans have been thrown into disarray as I attempt to fathom how to install the camera tails along with a RJ45 plug into a weather proof junction box. I have searched high and low through every google search attempting to identify a compatible junction box to no avail. There is no information on the Swann website, You Tube or Google. I don't want to modify the tails as this will invalidate the warranty and also mean extra costs.

At the moment the only tidy way to install would be to install the cameras onto a junction box lid which is not my preferred option. I do not want to drill 25mm holes in the brickwork of my new home so at present my installation is on hold.

If anyone can offer any advice or ideas I am all ears!

As an installer, I deal with your problem every day. I wish the manufactures would stop building cameras like that and put a RJ45 connector inside the housing.

I either blow a big hole in the wall and push the cable and connector inside or use a round Bell box. The are generally weather proof aluminum enclosures that an outside light is mounted on.

I feel your pain.

Hi prairietech

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I have identified one company that produces a junction box that overcomes the issues we (and many others) are facing - http://www.customjunctionboxes.com/....however as they are in the USA I am unlikely to get them in quick time....and then there is the cost and possible UK customs duties too.

If all fails I may have to consider fixing my cameras to a junction box front with a 20/25mm hole cut to the front to pass the camera tails through to which the camera will then be fixed and should seal over the 20/25mm hole. I dont really want to be drilling 25mm holes in the brickwork of my new home.

Thanks for your input

Most of my installations are on commercial buildings so large holes are not as big a concern. However I install Axis brand cameras and their pigtails come out the back of the housing. So this allows the camera base to cover the large hole and the pigtail is not exposed to damage or cutting.

The custom junction box link you provided shows an expensive solution. These same junction boxes are available in our home improvement store for around $ 12.00. Add a couple of cable glands at $ 5.00 and you would have the same thing. But everyone is entitled to make a profit.

Some installs doing a bigger hole goes quick...but sometimes with a brick/cement wall...up on a ladder drilling away...just poking the tiny Cat5 cable through is preferable instead of dulling a big expensive drill bit (that's trying to push me over on the ladder...hehe).

I've got to where the cameras I usually use have some junction boxes I can buy along with the cams for like $10-15...but these are made for the specific camera

Thanks for all your comments and advice, it is truly appreciated.

tomcctv what a fantastic find!....... those dahua PFA 134's would have been just the job but at £18.00GBP they are expensive (but quality).

I have to confess that I have now purchased some junction boxes for which I am going to customise with the bullet cameras fitted to the front.....wish me luck!
