Javik 0 Posted February 9, 2016 It is mysterious why a camera with POE would also offer Wifi capability. I assume this is because most cameras offer both POE and regular DC-only power capability. Is there a third option, where the POE Ethernet communications span length is too long (such as previously used for power and balun analog video) so the camera is configured to use POE, but use Wifi to connect instead? No, poe has the same distance limitation as the data. The reason likely is that its cheaper to simply add a wifi module than to also remove the poe module. Also, some folks like the abilitiy to choose what they wish to use. Finally, a poe and wifi camera can generally be powered by poe but transmit data over wifi. So if you are 50 feet from an outlet you can power the camera with poe and not have the voltage drop you would with a long extension on the power supply.
