Optic Fiber Installation - First time installation messed up

Recommended Posts

Hi , I am a system integrator doing a OFC installation for the first time In India and am facing a problem .Hoping you experienced installers can help me out .

The site has 5 cameras ,4 IP cameras are working on Cat 6 ( within 100 meter range from NVR )

We are using the following hardware

Hikvision 2MP Bullet outdoor IP POE ( 30 meter)

HIkvision 16 Channel NVR ( Full POE ) with 8 HDD capacity.

Gigabit Single-Mode Media Converter - 2 nos

Link for model http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-4792_MC210CS.html

We are using a hikvision 16 Channel POE NVR and one of the cameras is at a distance of 300 meters from the NVR .Earlier We tried using two POE extenders on cat 6 cable ( armoured) but was not able to connect the camera .

Then we decided to use OFc cable single mode 6 core as the distance was around 300 meters from NVR .

We have a local power source on the camera pole so can use a local 12 Volt 2 AM power supply to power the camera .

A third party vendor was paid to connect the OFC cable and did so but the rx/tx light on the media converter which is supposed to glow when the cat 6 cable is connected does not glow .The camera does not start .

When we took the same camera and connected it near the nvr it works .The guy who connected the OFC cable to the media converter says that his connections are ok and the problem lies elsewhere .

Any suggestions would be welcome as we are getting a lot of pressure from the client .

Thanks in advance

Hi, thank you for the reply . There are no joints in the cable . Last night asked the team to connect the media converters to each other using a fibre patch cord and still there was no signal .so wonder if there are male/female type or receiver/sender media converters .we have used the same model of media converters at both ends .any other suggestions please advise .

The converter has to be. Hooked up with tx and rx reversed. Check that. You can also shine a light through the fiber to see if you at least have a physical connection. A simple flashlight will work

Thanks Jerome/toss

You both were right . Thanks a ton ,On Saturday night the camera finally started working and our first ofc installation got completed .

We had to change the media converter as per your recommendations and the third party vendor had not done the splicing properly . Once these problems were sorted out the camera started working .
