SewerRat1000 0 Posted June 8, 2016 I work for a sewer maintenance company that is looking for a way to view (or "skim" inspect) the inside of our manholes without necessarily having to drive out to the location, pup up the manhole, and then look inside/take pictures. I'm looking for a camera device we can place in each manhole, access via Bluetooth or wireless coverage, from a PC or mobile device, and snap a picture of the inside. We would like to be able to check out the inside of the manhole from any location around the city. We are trying to limit the amount of time we spend inspecting manholes that don't need as frequent attention. Anything I've read online about products I'm looking for shows these needs to be a base station for wireless internet cameras to work and be accessed. We want it to be battery operated so we don't have to run electric and can just switch out the battery when needed. We don't wanted continued video surveillance, just access to be able to turn it on when prompted, snap a picture, receive the picture, then turn it off, all from a different location. Someone please tell me if I'm being realistic or just dreaming of the perfect product. Thanks
jeromephone 6 Posted June 8, 2016 I can think of a couple of issues but don't really have a solution first issue would be power. How are you going to get power to a camera /device in a way that is explosion proof? what kind of connectors fittings will you use that will hold up to sewer gases and general dampness in a manhole. A camera or housing that can be used in these conditions will be very expensive. It would not eliminate the driving to various locations but it might be easier to develop a camera that you could insert through a special cutout in the manhole to take a snapshot with out having to deal with pulling the manhole cover. Again that camera would have to be designed to handle the environment. Something like a snake cam?
