Help required in choosing home CCTV and survelance system

Hi,

 

I am new to this. I want to DIY install a system to monitor my home I see verious choices of brands and wonder what experience and recomendations other have. Key functionality are:

 

1. Remote access. I am skilled at network admin so security can be wrapped up in other security and access controls

2. Which Brand to buy.

3. Are IP cameras better or cheeper than standard ones. Are cameras of the same type interchangeable. I.e can you use a traditonal Swan camera with a Sentient DVR box?

4. Other facilities such as door sensors and remote control of electics are interesting and useful but not a show stopper
