General CCTV PC usage question

I was curious, if I setup my GV900 in a 3.2ghz, 1 gig of ram, Intel chipset PC can I do any of the following without degrading the performance of the PC:

 

Can I have 1 main OS drive & 1 main storage drive & then add 3 other Hard drives for the sole purpose of sharing these drives to be accessed by 3 other PC's on a network?

 

I want to use the server as a CCTV server & also as a "file server" (basic windows folder sharing). I want to do this but I dont want to do it at the cost of performance to the CCTV system.

 

I have an 8 camera system at the moment (probably 10 in another few months).

 

I know the general concensus is towards having a stand alone server that you never use for anything (no antivirus even). Any thoughts or opinions on that?

Basically the consensus is to use your DVR for security only for reliability sake. Security is a mission critical application and therefore if you want to not take any chances on any mishaps it should be seperate.

 

You could probably do what you want to do depending on the amount of total data that you are trying to push through the system. Such as compression, frame rate and resolution of the video you are recording. Security systems can ge very demanding on a hard disk especially with 8-10 cameras running at decent framte rate.

its going to slow it down when theyre transferring large files .. Better off with a cheap Via PC just for the file transfer .. like a 2.4Ghz 512RAM .. cheap video card .. then get a seperate PC for the DVR and use a KVM Switch.
