Temporary setup on site with no WiFi

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm setting up a temporary security camera system for a site with no WiFi. Cameras will likely be moved regularly, hence I'm looking for cameras that record straight to SD card. I will be able to visit the site every few days to change cards etc. I need to be able to set cameras up on site (adjust view, zoom etc), ideally via an Android app.

I've found a number of cameras that claim they can record straight to SD card and can be set up via an app:

Reolink RLC-411WS

Reolink RLC-410S

IdeaNext 1901

HikVision DS-2CD2635F-IS

Can these be set up directly from the app though? i.e. without connecting through a WiFi network?

If the above cameras can't, does anyone know of any cameras that can?

Additional requirements: optical zoom, high resolution, infrared.

Any advice on cameras or setup would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi. A site with no internet ?

A wifi network is local .... Wifi router

IP cameras require a local network and then you would connect to local network with your app

What type of site .... How big ... How many cameras

Hi tomcctv, thanks for the response.

Site is quite big, cameras may be quite far apart. At least 4 cameras needed at first.

Site is derelict so no WiFi or power, I'm planning on using 12v power packs.

I thought you might need a local network. Could I not connect via a WiFi hotspot? Just to get the cameras set up? I just need to be able to check they're pointing at the right things, adjust the zoom and set them to record. They don't need to be monitored live.

If the cameras I mentioned won't work, what would you suggest?

Hi. Sounds like a lot of expense which you will find to be only thing to be stolen

I would look at GSM sim motion sensors and 1 or 2 trail cameras

Thanks but that's not really what I'm after. I don't need alerts. I do need high quality footage and a zoomable lens.

Cameras will be well out of reach so no risk of theft.

Ok what is your budget for each camera

Power pack idea will not work for you unless you are there every day and night time it will run flat.

Around £100 ideally.

You can get some pretty big power packs. I will be able to change them daily. Cameras only needed for night time filming. There is the possibility of attaching to the mains electricity. This might be easier but I still need to confirm.

The main point is that they need to be set up and be able to film and record without being connected to WiFi.

You are getting mixed up with Internet and wifi.

Your cameras need to be connected to a wifi router .... Then you will be using local wifi to connect to cameras.

£100 sorry you can't do it for that.

Are you overlooked at your area ?

But to keep power down .... Look at Poe and use Poe switch

I'm not confused. I can't have the cameras running through WiFi routers. I can't power a router if there's no power on site. Could you not use a phone as a WiFi router?

Well I'm flexible. What do you think I should be budgeting?

The camera links you posted need to be on a wifi router or switch

Then you have a local wifi network to your cameras

You can only access your cameras while on site (within the local network)

Which is why I said you can't run on a power pack from somewhere like halfords.

Is this site isolated ?

That's to get onto Internet ?? Nothing to do with what you are asking.

you need a router ...... Not for Internet .... But just to give you your local network ..... Wifi will be from router to your laptop or mobile while you are at the location

I never mentioned the internet, i think it's you that's confused.

I think you can use that thing as a normal router. Not the internet. Anyway that was an example, a portable router would do the trick i think.

Why do you not listen

That is not a router ..... I'll give you a clue .... How are you going to connect 4 IP cameras to it .... I'll tell you that you can't

So again for what you want to do you need a router with wifi.

None of your links will work together

You need to build a simple local network for you to have control of your cameras and recordings ..... And it is simple to build

2 x 24VDC 250W solar panels connected in parallel. Generic brands work well, but I look for panels with a decent warranty.

20 Amp controller. Preferably waterproof.

2 x 12V 150Ah batteries connected in series. I use Ritar regularly.

IP68 rated electrical enclosure to mount the electronics. From local electrical supplier.

A lot of routers, access points, switches, PoE IP cams etc are 12VDC, so find the right ones and there is no need for an inverter, or transformers.

You can then use wifi for close cameras (Access points really should be mounted externally as the signal bounces off metal) and wireless bridges for long distances between cameras, but they will need their own solar power. I use Ruckus.

Be careful of high speed PTZ PoE IP cam's as they use ACV, not DC with a large current draw to spin the drive motors.

As an added bonus, you could use an inverter to get your local AC mains Voltage on sunny days.

I don't know the currency conversion between you and AU, but you might want to put an extra zero on the end of your budget figure.
