Help or ANY input on Security Cam Install for new client

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm Zach.

I'm brand new to the forum (and to CCTV installs in general) So I apologize in advance if I say something that doesn't make total sense.

I am in need of some serious help. I work as a contractor doing mostly computer repair and things of that nature, but I got a request from a new client that said he needed a security system in place. We've only communicated via phone and e-mail and I'm due to go out to his residence on the 21st of this month to get a lay of the land and see in-person what I'm up against. Now, my background is, I have an 8 channel Q-see system at my house. Simple DVR with 4 cameras attached. Easy peasy. All the cameras are wired, and that's about the extent of my camera installation experience goes. My client, however has a farm that he needs surveillance on. His biggest concern is that he wants e-mail alerts when motion is detected. I'm going to upload a picture of the layout. Another factor is that his only internet out there is a Verizon Jetpack hotspot. The total distance of the area needed is close to 800ft. He DOES NOT want a wired system and insists that it be wireless. He said, "Let's get solar powered" which I don't even know if that's possible. There are two building. A shop and a well house. Both have power at them.

After days of researching, I found myself at best buy and purchased One of the Arlo systems by Netgear. Completely wireless with batteries. 2 days later I returned it because even though they claim 300ft range, It lost signal around 150ft. Another thing I should point out is my client has already paid $900.00 and is now expecting me to deliver. So that's my budget.

Any advice or feedback would be so helpful and appreciated. I realize I got in over my head and I'm just wondering if I should scrap the whole project and return his money, or if there's another option I haven't explored. Thank you everyone!

Can be done but it's specialist stuff. You'd be on a hiding to nothing (same as I would) piecing it together from scratch.

Relying on video motion detect outdoors is probably a bad idea, if he is serious its worth looking into beam-break and PIR/microwave detection which can be better targeted and "tuned" for effectiveness; the CCTV just providing a means for investigating triggers remotely. Has he thought about the hours of darkness?

He "thinks" he has thought about the hours of darkness. What he told me, is that he is growing hemp. And he wants to make sure that no "dummies" mistake it for something else and run off with it. It's sooo far out in the middle of nowhere. My initial thought was to place a dvr in building 1, with an extender that has 1 ethernet port. So it would be like, Hotspot---->Extender---->DVR---->Cameras. And maybe mount 2 of them on the roof looking to the west and then same setup in building 2 looking towards the east. Would this not work? If he just wants email alerts if motion is sensed, it wouldnt require blazing fast internet right?
