Limited bandwidth for remote viewing. Any solutions?

Recommended Posts

I need to remotely add/remove cameras to manage viewing different areas remotely while bandwidth is limited. Or I need to be able to assign different cameras to different users so I can switch user accounts, and view different cameras. Additionally I would love to able to reduce the quality of the cameras I am viewing so that they take less bandwidth in the substream. My cameras are 960h wired cameras but I want a system that records at even higher resolution but which I can remotely view at lower resolutions.

The system I am looking at currently is the Speco Technologies D8HS using Multiclient. That system & software allows me to reduce the viewing quality of the all the cameras but I am still waiting for a reply to learn if I can have users who view different cameras.

You can record at high res and remotely view video at lower res with many NVR's...you can also do this with pc software like blue iris...you can also limit users to specific camera groups..you can also impose bandwidth limits ( in the form of lower quality images thus saving bandwidth) on a per user basis.

Which systems does blue iris work with is it any system with onvif support? Is there a list of great software on the forum and what systems they work with?

I have looked at a few dvr's and hybrids but I haven't found any other remote software that allows you to view the camera at a lower quality to reduce bandwidth, besides speco hs software+browser and ht series only in the browser. I settled on the hs series because of the supported software multiclient as it allows me to reduce the quality of all the cameras I am streaming, chopping bitrate more than by half. I just want to make sure I'm not totally missing something choosing a system for the wrong reasons but honestly it doesn't seem like many systems have great bandwidth management tools.

Edited, post thought

You mentioned NVR but my focus is wired not ip. I have a large metal building it is a headache getting ip to work but a few cables and my problems vanished. I just would love 2 ip cameras that are close to base so I chose the hybrid unit

There are specialist systems that monitor available bandwidth in real time and dynamically adjust resolution to match via a transcoder.

Vemotion is one such system.

IP does not mean wireless!!!! Run ethernet to each camera. Use the SAME ethernet cable to power them (POE).

Blue iris runs on windows...see the website for a demo. You have extreme control of remote viewing bandwidth.

Thanks I didn't realize I could use a windows pc + software as a server then simply plug an ip camera into the lan. That really makes life a lot easier so now the next consideration is price for the software so I'm starting to Google options. I asked Blue Iris for a quote for their VB-40 utilizing bandwidth management. This forum is great I'm glad I asked before I purchased. I believe I asked for a quote from vemotion also by the way

Blue iris is a fixed price http://blueirissoftware.com/purchase/ and has not connection to the vb40

You dont need the vemotion vb40 for your little setup, thats insane

I noticed there are a ton of software options for using your pc as a nvr and just running ip cameras. Some of these options are even free. So I am shopping for a decent computer to install, I will replace the cameras with ip cameras and hopefully I will be able to find a solution. I definitely do not want to pay a licensing fee with a recurring payment.
