stevenriz 0 Posted November 2, 2016 hi everyone. Installed 3 outdoor bullet type GW IP cameras. They have an ethernet jack tail that I planned to stuff inside the mounting plate on the side of the house siding but it is too big to fit. So we just left the ethernet wire and jack (plugged in of course) under the white siding mount plate. This is the same type of plate you would mount a light fixture on etc. I know it isn't recommended and may even be dumb (there I said it) for the wiring to see the elements but is it really that bad? I ran POE to the cameras so no external power adapter was needed here. It is just the camera "tail" and the ethernet drop hanging outside the house. Thoughts? Problem is they are so high up and am relying on friends in construction to help mount these things.
jeromephone 6 Posted November 2, 2016 Not a problem until moisture or uv gets in the connector then you run the risk of ruining the camera as well. if possible at minimum I would wrap the connections with coax seal and or tape to at least get some weather protection. Ideally the outside camera would have no visible wires and all connections should be done inside the building.
the toss 0 Posted November 2, 2016 Electricity & moisture is a very big problem and I'm not talking electrical safety here. ELECTROLYSIS I have seen a 18swg wire completely corroded through in just 2 days through the action of salt water and 12Vdc.
