Does it hurt the hard drive if I turn off the dvr while the record light is still on and if I turn off the dvr from the mains is it bad?

Probably wont hurt anything but its always best to shut down DVR properly. You do take some risk in damaging the hardware and software.

Hello. I suppose if you shut off the cameras prior to shutting off the DVR that would cause the DVR to stop recording to the hard drive.

I question hardware damage, especially mechanical hard drives. They detect when power is lost, then use the spinning disks to generate enough power to park the heads.
