System design advise for vacation home

Recommended Posts

Hello forum,

I have spent countless hours trying to determine the direction to go with a system for my sisters vacation home. They are more interested in viewing the condition of the overall home and docks vs security but have agreed that the security benefit is a factor since they did have a storage break in recently.

To view the entire perimeter of the house, the cameras would have to be placed in the yard as opposed to on the house. I am concerned that these camera placements would not be able to sense human motion well enough or the setting necessary would cause numerous false alarms. Is that a legitimate concern, and if so what is your recommendation(s)?

Hardware budget is $1,000, preferably $750. Perhaps 3 outdoor and 1 indoor camera. Dependable weekend technical support is critical, at least on Saturday.

They like the ease of install the Arlo offers considering the extensive underground runs that would be necessary for POE. I question the reliability of wi-fi, rechargeable battery, and poor support. Thoughts? Can you help me define to them how wi-fi is less reliable then POE if I am correct.

Now for Cloud vs NVR vs NVR with backup: The NVR would need to hold approximately 3 weeks as a standalone which adds cost. If motion sensing notification is reliable does that negate the need for a huge hard drive? Should we consider going with no DVR and cloud service or NVR with cloud back up such as amazon cloud?

For the hardware, this forum seems to lean towards Hikvision as a quality product. Any other quality systems to consider? Are others such as night owl, swann etc a risk? Lorex?

I have attached a group of house picts. The docks are effected by the water level dramatically.

I can't thank you enough!

Lorraine
