i have a 8 year old swann swdvr-82550h it is and 8 channel dvr that i installed myself. if i remember rightly the cameras are 420 res. video cable going to the camera is a standard bnc connector

 

any ideas on just updating the cameras or the whole system?

or switch to poe. i have no problems running cat5, and i have networked the whole house and designed and built htpcs

With your skill set I'd built an PC based IP system. I use Geovision cameras. The cameras include software. Whatever cameras you go with I'd recommend they be H.265 (the latest compression technology). They reqiure less storage space and use less bandwidth.
