Dicka24 0 Posted October 28, 2017 Hi guys. I'm new here, and a camera novice, so thanks in advance. I own a commercial warehouse with some second floor office space. Last year I had a camera (and alarm) system installed in the corner office area I occupy (I rent the remaining 95% of the building to one tenant). My camera system DVR is a HikVision DS-7316HQHI-SH. Currently I only have 2 cameras set up as I only occupy a small amount of space. On the outside of the building a former tenant left an Ademco Security Camera ACC334e in a boxed housing (picture below). This camera is secured outside my window and has been inactive for a couple of years. I had to do some repair work within reach of the camera so I opened it up to see what was inside, clean up the glass/lens, and point it in the right direction. The wiring comes into the building right where my office is, above the drop ceiling, and runs through the joists to the office space next to mine where the former tenant had their server/electronics room. Anyhow, my questions: #1, can I cut the lines that run through my ceiling and connect this camera to my DVR? Again I'm a camera novice, but I do build computers and am fairly handy as a contractor, but am not sure what/how these cables connect to the DVR. Power adapter, simple coaxle cable splice, etc....? All pointers are welcome, and please talk to me like I'm a moron. I find it helps make things easier to understand . #2, Is this camera even worth connecting? The install date scribbled on it says 7/7, so it's at least 10 years old. I can fish the wires back to where they went to, or I could splice them above my ceiling, but am I better off investing in a new camera altogether? As a computer and tech geek of sorts, 10 years is a loooooooooong time. The hobbyist in me would like to try to connect this camera just to see if it works and what it looks like regardless. The realist in me would like to have a camera that not only works well, but that also performs at a decent level. #3, If I replaced this unit, what would you recommend and what would such a unit cost? Maybe more importantly what qualities should I look for in a new camera (night vision, 720, 1080, boxed, bullet, IP, tvi, ahd, digital, analog) . As I mentioned previously, I own the building. This camera is on the front corner, and points back toward the parking lot. There are about 75 spots + loading docks, and it's about 200 feet to the back of the lot, or the property line. It is fairly well lit at night as we recently installed all new LEDs on the exterior. #4, If I do replace the camera with something more current, is it something that I can do (weekend warrior style), or am I better off hiring a professional? I'm a handy person as a contractor, hobbyist computer builder, and mediocre tech geek but I've never messed with security cameras before. Again, all pointers, advice, comments, etc are much appreciated.
