PC DVR card with suitable remote viewing software

Recommended Posts

First post here. Can someone point me in the right direction please. I want to set up a 4 channel pc dvr card. I want to use this setup to monitor the cameras from a LAN workstation. Most of the viewing software I have seen pictures of seem to be of a set screen size 1024x768, and can't be adjusted in size. Would like to have the viewing software reduced to 10cm x 10cm and moved to the bottom right and optioned to stay on top so that other tasks can be done but still able to see the camera viewer. Is there such a card with software that can do this?

Not really interested in recording and all those other fancy features.

That is exactly what I want. What are the actual sizes of the mini and ultra mini screen modes? This will depend on the physical screen size and resolution, but for example, do you have any overall screenshots of these modes on a 19 inch screen running 1280x1024? Neat the way they will stay on top and can be placed in the corners.

Is this available for any other cards besides geovision? I have a Swann DVR card which is Taiwanese and runs SuperDVR software that uses activex for its remote viewer.

Superdvr here

Does any other remote viewing software enable different screen modes?

This one is only for Geo (my Third Generation version), I did do a second generation version for Iview when i used their cards "temporarily" and the first generation was done for Kalatel Stand Alone DVRs ... I also did a custom Multi View version for someone else a few months ago .. also I have planned to add many more features including multisite, just right now things are tight and looking for a regualr job as we speak ...

Meanwhile all media and data files can be located here;

OK the question is do I go GV 250 -4, GV 650 -4 or the GV 800 -4.

I am in Australia and the PAL frame rate will be 16,50, 100fps. Live monitoring is the purpose rather than recording.

If I am only watching 1 camera as opposed to 4 will the total framerate still be divided by 4?

With the Swann DVR card and its remote viewing software there is a definite degradation of the camera image to the remote workstation across 100Mb Lan compared to the server view. Would I expect this with a Geovision card and LiveVue across a LAN? CPU usage appears minor when viewing alone.

There seems little difference between these GV cards except framerate and the no. of audio channels. The GV 250 is more likely to work with a non Intel chipset?

The GV250 is basically a generic card, that works with the Geo Software. It will actually work with other Generic software if wanted, and even though Geo says otherwise, it works on Via Chipsets .. at least for me. But it is their budget card, and the frame rate is slower than the rest. Its good for the budget jobs though. Live video is affected though, so yes the live video would be the total fps / 4 .. recording can be much better though, as it will distribute the frames among the cameras picking up motion, when motion record is used and Smart record is checked.

The GV600 i dont see much point to .. id just sell the GV250... the GV800 would be real time across the board . but its not cheap ...

Video will degrade across the Lan, with any video ... as it needs extra compression .. ive heard (but not tested) that Gigabyte Routers/Switchers improve the quality over the LAN ..

Is video quality across the lan all the same between the different GV cards? If I knew I was going to get better remote live viewing across the LAN , I would get the more expensive card. Is the limitation in quality the LAN, viewing software, CPU or DVR card?

What sort of bandwidth are we looking at with an uncompressed composite signal that is digitalised? MPEG2 DVD quality has no troubles being viewed across a 54Mb wireless LAN.

Same across the boards.

All networked video is compressed and therefore there is a lack in quality.

Ocular, keep in mind that your thinking in terms on a single stream. From the software end, we have think in terms of 16 to 200 to 1,000,000 streams. Streaming 16 streams of uncompressed video across a network at full resolution is more then most networks can handle. Keep in mind that one of the limations that we face is the speed of the PCI bus, which is much faster (Current PCI spec, not PCI-X or PCI-E) then a 10/100 network with much lower latency.

I understand the fustration of "My application only needs X so all programs should be writen to do X." but it's not an idea that scales well.

Thanks for those comments, I understand that my needs are more for the small office/home user and for live viewing rather than surveillance and recording. I am relieved that my needs seem to be met by Rory's LiveVue software and have purchased my GV250/4 and will try it out soon.
