Here is a housing you could use to put a PTZ so it isn't a eyesore. You just have to find a place to recess it.

Have any of you actually used Auto-tracking in the real world?

 

Sounds great in writing and works great in a controlled room environment, but once you apply to the real world, it usually becomes a real nuisance and fails to perform its tasks correctly.

 

Notice the carefully phrased description:

occasional presence of people or vehicles

 

If you have a situation with little to no motion and a controlled path with no obstructions (trees, building, etc) then motion tracking is awesome. Otherwise, firmware based motion tracking for PTZs is limited in logic. I have used some extremely advance and expensive software based motion tracking that anticipates motion and can track multiple objects crossing each other, and sadly it still fails.

Phoenixad, I have wondered the same thing, and you bring up a VERY REAL point. How can an exterior PTZ in a parking lot with changing lighting and weather patterns be able to track vehicles or people when at any point in time there could be one or 50 people/cars.

 

Everyone asks for this, but it's going to be a while before we can deliver it. For indoor hallways and such, why not just put in more cameras, it would be cheaper.

Auto tracking is only use full in areas with little or no expected movement. Say you have a large fenced in area and I night time no one is allowed in. Auto tracking might work well in the situation.
