Any idea where i can find a system like this? Not just a camera that looks at liscense plates like the speed bump camera but an actual camera that can register what is read on a liscense plate and log just the letters and numbers in maybe a text document on your computer or something similiar anything helps

Geovision systems can do this, sometimes.

 

The term you want is recognition. The system actually recognizes the text on the plate.

Extreme CCTV has the REG line of cameras for LPR .. $$$$$ though.

what kind of lense filter do they use? 760 or higher? I've tried the 760 but sem to "see" vehicle lights despite the filter.

They do alot more than just the IR .. they have the glass tinted very very dark, what they do in the camera I dont know as I never had one here in my place to test, but as far as I remember the IR is invisible, probably around 950+.

Been playing around with this myself. Bought 4 IR filters, 1000nm, 900nm,830nm, and 780nm. The 900nm seems to work the best for blocking out natural light, yet letting the IR from my Illuminator in. Put up two test cams and setup DVR . I bought the 37mm Schott Glass filters. The 37mm filters fit my Tamron 5-50mm lens perfectly. For the test, I am using Sony SSC-M383.

When I opened that site I immedately noticed that those tiny cams look VERY much like the ones all over the city of Tulsa, OK. I know they aren't Extreme's and I know they can LPR.

 

I look at toll booths and intersections alot nowdays.

Yep, i got a quote for a couple REG's, just the software that is, was like $10K

Matrox has Plate recognition software in their tools bundled with their imaging library (MIL)version 8, interfaces with their P-series smart cams but I think the software can integrate with exisiting systems.Maybe you wanna check them out. COVI...................I am surprised that they don't exploite the multi-screen capability that they have on the other camera's in LPR technology. I guess that when you digitally enlarge it the pix don't play very well?

 

I've got a few COVI's and they are very nice...even thought about using a filter on them to see how they work out. Not to many of my clients want the expensive (bells & whistles) camera's.........

Yeah, the original poster was looking for a "system" but really its all about the software. The LPR (ALPR) technology has taken off over the past few years with new startups, and the rise in complex security on the commercial end (airport, police and homeland markets etc) Everybody is laying out bids for upgrades in exsiting systems trying to estimate integration with lower costs I come accross alot of this info from contractor/engineering friends I stay in touch with that do gov/county highway/heavy construction projects back east, and often involve retofits, the fiber layouts alone Ive seen in some AS-BUILDS are enough to make you wanna start drinkin heavy. If I was younger and not semi-retired its a field I would of liked to have gotten into, real challenging work. Well anyway I like the mountains too much now to go back to that mess back east they call living. I just thought you would like to see some of the covi LPR shots after reading your post, I did a install last year for a small Keno casino here and used some covis relaced a mickey mouse setup that the owners son did with some cheap oem domes and he was pleased. He has a stall of gas and propane pumps outside used some Pelco ICS310's, I've had good luck with them. Best of health to ya.

I think what CollinR should have and meant to say is it all depends on your situation. See other people like CollinR do not consider the facts when mounting these cams. We have over 15 years of CCTV experiance. How far are the cars away from the point you want to mount the camera? Is this application for day, night, or both. I agree to the extreme CCTV'S Reg Cam, but there are less expensive cams out there that do the same trick for less. What does your budget look like?
