Signal comparison: Composite vs. S-Video (Y/C)

Recommended Posts

I've done this to see the difference between composite and s-video signal to be prepared what i could expect from a camera with both outputs. The problem was.. the camera i got had such a bad chrominance channel that those s-video improvements weren't important at all.

So, here are some synthetical testimages (PC/Loopback capture) from full resolution PAL signal with high per-pixel information (576 TVL) captured at 704x576 (52µs per line) from tv-out (unprocessed/pixel-exact/no flickerfilter).

Hardware is:

Ati R300 TV-Out

Philips SAA7134 based capture card

Maybe its useful for someone...

Note:

The pictures below have nothing to do with a real camera picture. They are created by a PC and re-captured over analog signal to simulate the signal loss of composite and Y/C only.

CompositeSVideo1.jpg CompositeSVideo2.jpg

Left side is composite, right side is s-video (in both pics).

The pictures may be scaled down to fit screen. Click on the scaled pic to get pixel-exact view.
