Agent_Jay23 0 Posted May 16, 2007 Yesterday I was searching eBay and saw that there was a 4CH 40GB GE StoreSafe DVR up for auction. So I was like "Cool...I'll bid on it to see how far the bid will go." Than before I had time to bid I noticed that there was a "Buy It Now" price set at $299 for that DVR!! So I did what ANY installer/buyer that knows about GE would do. I bought it! and that same night I saw that they had up for auction a 10CH 80GB GE StoreSafe DVR... Once again I said to myself lets me see how far this will go. Before I ever placed a bid on this DVR the current bid was set at 255!!!! I'm like... Are these people's head set right? This is a $2500+ DVR in cost. And today when I came home from work I was happy to know that I won that DVR at $570 bucks. Both DVR's are listed as "Slightly used and in Great working condition. With power cables only, No Manuals or boxes."(Different eBay Sellers BTW).. eBay is known to have great deals on a varity of things and most of the time you can profit off someone's lost. And I've never used GE CCTV products before and I couldn't have beaten those prices with a STICK and a loaded AK-47 so I said what the hell... Im not lossing anything so I just went for it and hope I'm not disappointed when I receieve the DVR's.
securitymonster 0 Posted May 16, 2007 Great find! Hope they work out for you and yes you can find deals on eBay every now and then. But.... I would never sell a "used" DVR to a client nor would they appreciate purchasing a used DVR. Typically in the business world, when something is discounted, there is a reason. For obvious reasons, I rely heavily on the manufacturer warranty for those "just in case" reasons. Especially when there is a 3 year warranty. Example...If your used DVR fails on you 2 months down the road, you will be responsible for replacing the unit. How are you going to do so without a warranty? You will have to purchase another one. This is going to cost you a lot more out of pocket.

Like if i buy a cam and wanna bench test it, I can simply hook it up to any of the DVR's.. And if i have a client that wants to try a StoreSafe DVR but wants to see the online display i can simply log into the DVR at my home instead of showing other clients other users DVR.. Which is wrong. And most of all I never used a GE DVR and i heard good things about GE's DVR's and also rory wont post a reply without saying "GE" But I wanna see what the hype is about and also why so much ppl like GE's CCTV products. The only CCTV products i've used before are Honeywell and Eclipse. So this is a BIG change fore me. And plus for that price i had to buy them to try them out. scorpion 0 Posted May 17, 2007 Good Job! Great find! My only concern would be if it was stolen equip. Other than that I commend you on buying it. I am always approached by people who need to rent a DVR for short term issues. I keep DVRs that came in on upgrade sells for emergencys. If I have a DVR issue it is nice to know I have one for back up. I once had a power supply go bad for a restaurant and had to butcher their power supply for the connector, and butcher mine for the working power supply. I was really glad on short notice that I could keep them going.
CSG 0 Posted May 17, 2007 The drives are very small. They are ok for demo use, but for an actual install I don't think its worth it. Also hope the seller has a return policy in case the DVR starts acting weird, otherwise the repair costs + purchase price may equal a new unit. good luck
securitymonster 0 Posted May 17, 2007 Nice Agent_Jay, if its for personal use thats a score!
kensplace 0 Posted May 17, 2007 Plenty of bargains on ebay if you wait and look long enough Ideal for personal use, as has been said already, you often dont get a warranty (mind you, I did pick up a good casino quality dvr for 30 quid, and the warranty was transferrable to me! So full support given also! But thats pretty rare. Plus it was brand new, well a few days of use, manufacters factory use for testing by the looks of the footage.) Many sellers upgrade to better equipment, and often stock is from repossessions/bankrupt companies etc, so there are good bargains out there. Whilst anyone worth their salt one use a ebay one without warranty for a end user, I do know of at least one person who *must* be doing that, as they are buying waaaaay to many cameras/ir lamps/controllers/etc for any form of personal use (even if they owned several mansions!) Its probably not a wise move though to resell them to a customer, not only is their the end warranty (or lack of) to consider, there are electrical safety aspects (botched repairs, fuses replaced by wires etc - had one 12v camera with loose mains wires inside it, marked as a mains camera!) and even security aspects (how does anyone know for sure the firmware on the dvr was not reprogrammed to allow a remote back door by the seller? Unlikely but possible...). But for personal use, there is nothing cheaper (other than maybe a free demo unit!) Check the sellers feedback carefully, some sellers would think nothing of selling a unit with known intermittant problems, with no disclosure. A good seller, will have good feedback. If its a new seller, then it really is a gamble! I often email other buyers who have bought untested items from a seller, and ask them if the items worked. If they all say no, then its a fair bet the others he is selling wont work. For safetys sake, always check the electrical safety of anything you get on ebay,. check fuses are correct, plugs are wired safely etc at the least. If you are going to use it for anything other than personal use then you would definetely need to have it properly safety tested (insulation resistance (PAT tested in the UK), and if you have the equipment, then its worth doing it for home use too. I understand where you're coming from kensplace. I'm hoping they both still have warranties on them.. If not then i'll just have to work with what i bought. I mean it would be wrong to sell a client a used DVR that doesnt have a warranty, but it can be very tempting when you look at the low prices you can buy them for and then you start to think about how much profit you can make buy selling them.. But I dont think i'll have to do that because it can cause plenty headaches, and if something does go wrong i'll have to take money out of my pocket and buy a new DVR. And as far as the eBay sellers goes.. I've looked at both their feedback and their well respected and both of them are over 1700 positive feedback comments as well as 98.0%+ in feedback rating.. If their feedbacks weren't so good i would've never made a bid on any of them cause I was already thinking kinda funny because of the low prices they were at. Im just hoping that the StoreSafe is better than the Honeywell and Eclipse DVR's that I use... And the software too!
rory 0 Posted May 17, 2007 sounds cool .. let me know how it goes .. sorry been really busy plus online offline with moving etc .. so didnt reply yet .. anyway also see my free waveVue software for GE Kalatel DVRs http://www.bahamassecurity.com/uploads/WaveVuePro(Kalatel).zip
cachecreekcctv 0 Posted May 17, 2007 You will also need the 2 following Ebay items. Check them out for yourself. I buy many. Ebay item # 3000063474522 Coaxial cable, and # 270111336272 Belden 16/2 Plenum cable. For around $180 , I can end up with 1000' of American made copper braid RG59, and 1000' of Industrial grade Belden 16/2 Plenum wire UL listed. Minus the BNC connectors that's 18 cents a foot , and I am running American made 16 guage wire, so there really no voltage/current issues on cameras alone. Just a thought

Just a thought cachecreekcctv i bet your paying 180+24.99(for shipping).. It might be a good price but i buy wire from cctvoutlet for about 206(1000 feet).. So all things arent really cheaper on ebay. But the wire your buying could be a high quality name brand that retails for 306! Who knows? But i get 1000 feet of wire for about 206. cachecreekcctv 0 Posted May 18, 2007 I guess you didn't really look up the Ebay item numbers. If you did , you would see that anyone can purchase the BELDEN 16/2 PLENUM RATED for $30 plus shipping. LOOK at the auction before you write anything. I work in Industrial Manufacturing. Belden is #1. I don't use cheap Chinese made siamese cable. Belden is UL LISTED PLENUM RATED. Do you know what the electrical code is concerning Plenum cable? Also , 16 gauge wire, not 18 guage. 1000' for $30 plus shipping. The coax I mentioned, trying to do you a favor, is AMERICAN MADE 95% copper braid RG59. Again , LOOK at the auction ad. Don't worry, I won't offer anymore suggestions on Ebay items. You buy from whomever you wish. Good luck.
