Do I really need to get a Captue box?

Hello everyone

 

I have just one simple question if possible. My cash register supports straight text output. Do I really need a capture box or can I just run a really long serial cable to my computer (its only one register). I would like to display receipt information on the geovision software.

How far is the register from the GeoVision DVR?

about 50ft

I was thinking of using a 100ft cable

 

but if the cable length isnt a problem will just a straigh seral cable work instead of having to buy the geovision box?

I have only done this once..... Next time I´ll use a Data Capture box.

Results were not great, very little control over how the text appears on the screen.

 

For a run of 30 feet, you could do it with a specially rigged serial cable, if the cash register is compatible.

The serial cable needs two wires crossed.

If memory serves, pin 3 at till goes to pin 2 in the computer.

Short out pins 4 and 6 at the till end (stops the cash register freaking out if the computer is down).

 

Everyone I talked to said there is a limit of 30 feet.

Have you guys ever heard of Avermedia

They make a box for the same purpose and it looks exactly like geovisions. Im thinking it should work fine with geovisions system

Its identical to the GV-Data Capture V2 box I have in my hand!

Except replace that Avermedia sticker for a Geovision one.

 

Avermedia and Geovision are in direct competition.
