Is there any benefit of a Intel Quad core system vs a C2D?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am going to be upgrading my server soon. The 3.2 Northwood chip is showing its age & now that my Geovision/HomeSeer system (home automation)/File Server are on the same box, I am seeing that the server is running slower quite often.

With the intel price cut on the 22nd of july, it makes the quad core under $250 Q6600 vs a higher clocking C2D in the same price range.

Is there any benefit for Geovision with a quad core vs a core 2 duo?

Thanks,

Rich

ive been testing a GV1480 for the past few days, on a Core 2 Duo 2.4 with 2GB DDR2 667 .. if anything it doesnt use much CPU, it has tons left, I would spend the extra money on more ram .. THAT it does use alot of ..

If the Core 2 Quad which is now $500, becomes the same price as the Core 2 duo then obviously there should be no question which one to get

If you want to know the specs of this one let me know .. all i can say is the Asus boards are great, though the SoundMax audio they are currently using is awful as far as drivers go. There are some bugs which Ive posted fixes for on Asus's forums for both the P5L-MX and the P5B-Deluxe, id imagine the same would go for other motherboards using these audio chips.

Otherwise the only thing I would add to this, would be 2x2GB Dual Channel DDR2-800. Although that said, still the 2GB DDR2-667 I have here is not suffering at all. I would also have liked to try a WD Raptor for the system drive, but maybe next time.

Quad core might allow for SageTV integration as well.

Thats 2 cores to Geo, 1 to homeseer and 1 to SageTV.

My 2c,

the core2 duo's rock

Ive been using 2gb ram, I wouldnt use anyless at 100 bucks for 2 gb, even value select

The ram is the major factor generally, as most people try to get away with 512mb,

Im not using vga cards just sharing the ram

Im also using the SV version seagate hdd's, they are a "good thing"

prob go to 4gb with asus board when I do my next 16 build.
