GV-800-8 + computer = good combo?

Recommended Posts

I am new to this forum and new to DVR, cameras etc.. I need to build a system for home and would appreciate some help from you knowledgeable gentlemen. I have decided to go with the Geovision GV-800-8 card. I have read everything I can find for the past three days and it seems these cards are picky about what PC's they will work with. If would be very helpful it you could take a look at the configuration below. I think it will work. It is a pre-built computer. I am one who hates to ask for help but I don't really want to buy something that won't work.

What do you think? It is priced at about $500.00. Suggestions?

Asus P5GC-MX 945GC Intel Socket 775 Motherboard

Intel Pentium D 925 3.0GHz Processor

80GB SATA II HD

512MB DDR2 PC4200 RAM

GeForce 7300LE 256MB PCI-Express (1DVI / 1VGA)

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

80GB harddrive seems very small, but you haven't stated how many days of video you want to store. Given the low price of hard drives these days, I would go with 250GB+ depending on your needs.

XP can run on 512 MB, but it will be happier with 1 GB or 2 GB.

I plan to add an external USB harddrive. This system is to watch my home when I am away. I have no way to protect the computer from theives. I can secure an external harddrive much easier. They may get the computer but I will still have them on video.

Ensure the motherboards northbridge and southbridge are Intel and you should be fine.

There is a PDF file here with tested computer:

The newer "Combo" cards are more picky with hardware (gv-1120 to gv-1480)

I even got the gv-800-8 running on an AMD 1.8ghz with 16mb graphics card.

Interesting idea on the external hard drive.

Does anyone have practical experience of the relative transfer speeds of USB 2.0 and SATA?

Id highly recommend the

Abit LG-95 mb, it is future proof for all series of Intel cpu's

I use the core2 duo cpu, but you can use a p4 or lower cost, you can always ug to c2duo later if nessacary they rock

I use min 2gb corsair value select ram, but 1 gb is fine

XP home is fine-

If u use 2gb ram, then you can share with vga. This way you can skimp on vga/pcie card to keep costs down

I have listed specs on latest builds in the " list tested pc's" in the thread above this.

Seems alot of $$ for what is actually considered old technology now .. but it should work fine. Are you buying it ready built or building it yourself?
