Newbie question: Lorex CCTV system with DVR card?

Recommended Posts

I have a Lorex L14S244C 4-channel observation system (w/B&W monitor). Is there a way to connect a system like this to a DVR card?

All of the DVR cards I've seen have seperate camera inputs. The only outputs on the Lorex monitor are standard and Slave outputs for audio and video (which are RCA connections) as well as alarm outputs.

The camera's for this system use PS/2 connectors (like computer mice & keyboards) so I can't just plug the individual cameras into a DVR card unless there are some that have PS/2 camera inputs, or if there are PS/2 to BNC converters available?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Bill

The professional answer is NO!

The DIY (do it yourself) answer is YES!

ARE you good with wire cutters, and a soldering iron?

They may have them, but I am not familiar with any DIN to BNC breakout cable.

This Lorex set is designed for a quick plug, and play set up. This is not designed for a professional installation.

I would recommend that you sell this device to someone, and then purchase some regular cameras. This will allow you to hook up a DVR card. You may have some other cost that you may not have figured on. You may have to buy a larger hard drive, and you may have to add some more memory to your computer.

Some of the entry level cards called 30 FPS will give you 7.5 FPS on each camera channel. A 120 FPS card will give you 30 FPS per channel. The card that give you 120 FPS, and you are using very high resolution for recording may not work well with your motherboard. Great another purchase! May as well build a custom computer for this card! Welcome to the professional installers world!! Miss one detail, and everything blows up in your face per se!

You will have to cut you cables. You will need to figure which wires are for power, and which are for video. If you have audio then you will have even more wires to figure out. Resplice these wires back together so that we can find out what is what. Red, and Black wire may be you power to the cameras. This would be nice! Quick and Easy! Yellow, and Green may be your video, and the other colors may be you audio. Measure the red, and black wires. Does this give you the voltage of your power supply? I do not know if Lorex uses 12 volt DC, or 12 AC, or 24 volt AC. ?? If this gives you your power reading then this is solved.

If you connect, and disconnect the yellow wire, does the video pop in, and out? If so then this may be your video wire. Disconnect the other wire, and reconnect it. Does the audio pop in, and out?

Once you have everything figured out, then you can connect a BNC connector to your video wire on the output of your camera wire. You can use butt connectors for you power wires, and crimp them to the wires from your monitor which will give you the power output.

You can put RCA connectors on your audio wires, and hook this up to your DVR card if it has an audio input connection.

You are going to find this to be a pain in your neck, but about 3 feet lower from there.

The wires are going to be real thin, and small, and difficult to work with!!

When you are done you are going to have such a patched system that you may have video that pops in, and out, and the whole thing will look like junk. OK! I take that back! I forgot that you are an electronics whiz, and you soldered everything, and you use good connectors, and used zip ties to keep everything neat, and clean.

If you have any questions post them here!

Good luck! You are going to need it!
