flat screen VGA monitors vs CCTV monitors

I knew this sounded familiar

---------------- My 2 Cents --------------------------------

An LCD is always a trade off for space saving over quality. Most ones labled CCTV LCDs simply have a Composite to VGA Converter built in. That only really matters if you are using a stand alone DVR with no VGA output, and still you can just use a convertor to a decent non CCTV LCD for the same end result.

Cheaper LCDs will not look as good regardless, primarily due to the lower specs. Check the specs. If its too cheap, then there may be a reason.

As already mentioned, the video is smaller than the native resolution.

If you do not have the LCD set to the native resolution, it will also look worse.

If using a PC based system with an LCD then use DVI for higher quality.

Also, dont use WideScreen LCDs for CCTV.

But no, it still wont match the CRT.

PS. im using a 26" LCD TV for my home cameras.

but I got it free!

You need to get your video feed to a 1:1, this doesn't matter what display you have be it CRT, LCD, plasma, DLP whatever. The problem with LCDs is the have a native resolution they should be operated at.

For normal analog cameras you'll want a native resolution that is a multiple of 640x480. Ideally also equal to the interface size. This will give you the highest quality result possible.

CRTs operate at many different resolutions and refresh rates, as such they are more forgiving compared to LCDs.

So what is your interface size?

Ya the live views on a lcd do not match a crt. the only lcd that i have seen come even remotly close (REMOTLY. NOT THE SAME) is panasonics lcd.

now that thing is like 1,500 retail. where a crt the same size that actually looks better retails for a couple hundred.

Panasonic i think is about to discontinue their crt's.
