Wired router behind wireless router

Recommended Posts

I have a customer who wants to provide free wireless internet to their customers and isolate their existing network (DVR & single office computer on a wired Linksys 4port) from the wireless side.

A quick google suggests hooking up the wireless router to the modem and connecting the wired router to the DMZ port of the wireless router.

The theory of it seems reasonable, are there any pitfalls to this and is there a better method.

How about incoming connections to the DVR & office computer, will double NAT come into play or will the DMZ port pass the incoming connection straight through to the wired router.

Thanks

Doug

Just off the top of my head:

Modem to router to wireless router.

Modem 192.168.0.1

Router in the 192.168. 1.xxx range with the gateway of the modem.

Wireless Router in the 192.168. 2.xxx range with the gateway of the modem.

Putting the router in the DMZ opens up the router to attack.
