CCTVINSTALLER 0 Posted October 2, 2004 Hi guys, Is it OK to use ordinary telephone wire to set up a network. My customer has just had his house done, and i don't want to use grey CAT5 cable on white skirting. Would there be any wrong with using twisted pair telephone wire (White) to set up a network? Cheers
Thomas 0 Posted October 2, 2004 You'll have to find (or recrimp the ends). Phone wire is RJ-11, Cat5 is RJ-45. Transmission speeds are going to suck, and it won't be the worlds most stable network. You know you can also get white jacketed Cat5. You really should use Cat5.
CCTVINSTALLER 0 Posted October 2, 2004 Thanks Thomas, I know what you mean, im really trying to avoid it, but the job is on monday, and i don't want to order any more cable. Basically, im only connecting 2 computers, (straight crossover in a way), but im gonna have a RJ45 socket on both ends, so crimping is not an issue. Also the 2 rooms are only around 10m apart, it shouldn't be too much of an issue should it?
Thomas 0 Posted October 3, 2004 If you have to do it, you have to do it...but wireless would be a better solution. The other part will be you will cap the max network speed at roughly three times dial up speed. It's not a very good solution.
cctv_down_under 0 Posted October 12, 2004 Thats not a really big distance apart, why not go wireless, it is indeed cheap enough now
