Computar Auto Iris Lens Cable Installation - Help Needed

Just purchased a video auto iris Computar lens; model TG3Z3510AFCS-IR.

 

This lens is for a GANZ camera (ZC-NH255N). Unfortunately I do not understand how to connect the lens cable to the camera. At the end of the lens cable are 3 wires; red, black, & white, which are bare (no connector). I was expecting a connector at the end of the lens cable, which would plug directly into the camera iris port. I realize the red is positive & black is negative... just not sure how I can connect to the iris port, since the camera has a typical 4-pin iris input connector.

 

Do I need to purchase a connector for the lens cable? I've purchased 3 GANZ cameras with lens already installed on the camera.. these already had the lens cable with a connector. The other lens were DC lens. Not sure why CBC would make a lens without a cable connector.

Dan, good choice of camera... and I am very familiar with it...

 

Your problem with the lens that you purchased is that it is a Video Lens compared to your other lenses that are DC lens.. The Video lens does not come with connector, rather connects to certain cameras with its three wires... None of the Video lenses ever come with connectors... it is the nature of this beast...

 

What I will suggest is to go with DC lens and the model number for replacement to what you already have is TG3Z3510FCS-IR... It is the identical lens construction, but this model is the DC lens...

Thanks for the very quick response. Actually I'm changing the lens for this camera from DC to video IR. I chose this lens since it would work better in low-light. Is there a way this lens can be used with the Ganz ZC-NH255N camera.

 

I can't believe CBC sells video IR lenses without a proper connector for their GANZ cameras. I have the Pro-Pak kit for 3 cameras, which are wonderful units.

If you ordered it as video lens, that is what they will send you... and video lenses do not come with connectors...

 

Also, the video lens does not work better than DC lens... it may stand true only on more expensive cameras, that have specific connections and calibration to take advantage of video lenses... and it is a real pain in the rear to really making good adjustments... vs. DC lens that works very well and works with less headaches...

 

If you ordered it from CBC as DC lens and if they sent video lens.. well, that is possible too... even though it is very rare for CBC to make mistakes like this, but it has happened before with us...

 

I take it that this was not part of your Pro packs... because if it is, they will change it very quickly...

 

As for using this lens with this camera, your best bet is to call CBC direct to either of their West or East coast offices... they have excellent technical support that will help...

If your camera have a switch on it labeled DC/Video then you can use your video iris lenses with the camera but you will need to get a DC lens plug. I'm surprised you didn't get one with either the camera or the lens. try calling your supplier and asking if they have any spares. You'll then need to wire it according to the manual. Red +12v, black ground and white is video or whatever they call it. Fyi here is some info on video iris lenses

 

Video iris lenses use the same mechanics as DC iris lenses so there should be no low light advantage from identical lenses from the same manufacturer in DC or Video. They are supposed to be better as they come with 'intelligence'. However the installer needs to know this to get any advantage and most don't so it is wasted money for many.

 

The intelligence is the Av/Pk adjustment, short for average / peak. How it works is the camera feed the lens power (red and black) and a copy of the video signal minus the syncs. You can hook it up to an oscilloscope and check if you want. The Av/Pk adjust ment changes the weighting between average light and peak whites. Turn it to pk and the lens shuts down more in response to spots of light, turn it to av and the lens will expose based on the average scene and allow spots to over expose.

 

With a DC lens the av/pk is hard wired inside the camera to a setting determined by the manufacturer.

Currently the Ganz camera has a 8.5-40mm DC lens. All I wanted to do was change the focal factor. Instead I got caught up with IR factor. Just wanted a good D/N lens with 3.5-10.5mm. Guess I'll have to see if I can exchange it for the DC lens.

 

Do I want model TG3Z3510FCS or TG3Z3510FCS-IR? Is there a real difference with the DC IR model?

Get the IR model. It is designed so that the focus won't shift when the camera switches from day to night and back.
