Wow, that's a whole course in CCTV but here is a short answer.

 

DVR records to hard drives and could be a quad dvr, multiplexed dvr, or multi channel DVR.

 

Multiplexer is essentially a time base corrected high speed switcher that lays down video frames one right after the other in quick succession and then on playback picks those frames back out.

 

Quad compresses 4 cameras into one video output.

 

Switcher simply switches from one camera to another automatically at preset intervals.

 

Which to use depends entirely on what your job requires. DVRs are becoming the defacto device to use on most jobs these days.

Cripes I havent sold a Mux or Quad in over three years.. mind you looping switchers are very popular, good cheats way to avoid buying real time cards for pc based systems, simply feed the cams to the switcher and loop to dvr then the feed from switcher can be programed, heaps cheaper as long as they do not want the switcher to be where the spot monitor is, then it eats up extra cabling and time.
