Security Camera to see mare foaling

Recommended Posts

sounds like a bullet camera or a rear vision camera.

0.2 lux in BW is not low at all for most bullet cameras.

But like cooper said if its dead cheap give it a whirl.

Otherwise I can at least point you to a bw bullet that would be a lower lux and a better brand (depends) than that.

Spot on Rory!!

I should have looked at the dimensions for the final clue. It certainly looks like a bullet camera on paper.

creekside,

The obvious problem you'd have using a 'bullet' camera, is you're generally stuck with the lens it comes with.

The type of camera I had in mind (although we don't consider Ganz a major player this side of the pond, and I've absolutely no experience of using it, or indeed its retail price) is at:-

Any equivalent quality brand would work a treat. If you're only going to use the camera for a short period, you won't need a housing, provided you leave the camera powered up all the time. If you don't need to use it, take it down and pack it away for the next season.

A little clue for you - if it gets colder, she may well hang on, and if it warms up, then things may happen faster than you expect.

Get that camera in quick, or it's no sleep for you this fall.

Well camera is on the way, mastercard charged, company does have 30 day money back guarantee so if it's crapola I guess I'll return it. It is in fact a bullet camera this is no good? It's fairly cheap I guess, 100 USD?? Definitely cheap compared with what we would pay here. We could hardly get coaxial cable here -- only one person would sell it. Other companies wanted us to buy the whole roll...

...and the mare hanging on till it arrives.

You often find that when you go to install the camera, that's when you notice a small four legged friend that wasn't there before

Bottom line is, as long as it does what you want, that's really all that matters (and you have a nice cute healthy little beastie, with a good natured mother to help).

Hope it all goes well, and keep us posted.

I don't know what brand as they say that they put them together themselves. Some part of it is Sony. The model was 3757 -- and I bought it from cctvimports.com which is also known as spycameras4less.com.

We are located in British Columbia, Canada.

It's supposed to be here sometime this week. So far the mare has not progressed any further. She's got milk but no bag so we're on standby. I'm not checking her in the night yet as she'd develop a bag first.

Do you think I paid too much??

Specs are good, 600TVL (EIA: 768X494), havent seen that in a BW bullet camera yet, let us know how it goes. Especially for $75 ..

Well, I'm not sure what a really good quality camera would do but this one is definitely fitting the job. I have to have one small light on in the alleyway, but as mentioned earlier I would have to be able to see in the stall to assist anyway. It's been as cold as -12 C and it seems to be doing just fine. I was a bit surprised when I first saw the size of the bullet camera, I was expecting something much larger. I guess size really doesn't matter - -ahahahah. Sic.

Anway, the mare is not doing much except loving being inside at night and watching me slave over her stall in the morning. Not a bit closer, we've passed one due date and looking more like December 6 may even be a date we will pass. Normally when the mare starts to "bag up" you are looking at a good week or two. Not there yet!!

Thanks for all the help and advice as I am extremely happy with what I see!

Cool.

Actaually a bigger camera, normally means more features (settings), better internal parts, and a wider selection of lens choices. Generally the image will be better, but it does not always matter, every situation is different. B/W cameras do not matter too much, even the very cheap ones can compete with the professional cameras, cheap color cameras can do the job too, but a huge difference in quality (color) is noticable between the cheap color bullet and the professional color camera with a good lens. I have BW bullet cameras in a local nightclub and around my appt and in a furniture warehouse and they work fine. When it comes to color however, I normally go a little more expensive on the camera, either a more mid range color bullet from provideo or a professional color camera. (Professional being a box type Traditional camera with high res and full featured). Unless of course the client sees the 2 and sais they dont care, then I leave it up to them.

-12 degrees, no wonder she loves being inside

Good to hear the camera is doing what you want creekside, that's the main thing. I Don't know whether the same thing happens in BC, but over here, if the temperature rises a few degrees above the previous week or so, then mares generally hurry up and get on with it; conversely, if you have a cold snap it holds them back. So keep one eye on the weather, and the other on the mare.

Rory,

Do you ever find that clients who know absolutely nothing about CCTV, will given the choice, often pick a larger camera simply because they think they are getting more for their money?

The ironic thing is in many critical applications, installers end up supplying rubbish cameras because that's what the clients wants, and the real quality stuff ends up being used for looking at emergency exits and fire doors!

Yep, I try to tell them now adays if it is somethin like you said, non critical, then just use a cheap 'er' camera, in other words a $490 day night camera is generally overkill in some situations. Eg, looking at a bunch of boxes in a small warehouse ..then comes into effect the 350TVL color dome .. still from Kalatel though cause I still like product hardware quality

When i said what the client wants, i meant having actual video demos on 2 seperate monitors, of each camera; in other words, this is what they get if they pick that camera .. pointed right at a front door entrance none the less!

anyway, got to get some sleep, 4.30 am, got a 80zone, 4 partition alarm system to start in the AM, well in a couple hours ...
