Ultra 8 questions/mods

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I recently installed an outdoor Ultra 8 dome with I/O board. I went into the dome menu and looked at I/O board status, the temperature indicated 41.9 Celsius, which is 107.2 degrees Fahrenheit!! How can this be? The ambient outside temperature is a chilly 18 degrees Fahrenheit! I can't wait to see what the summer temps are. Anyone have an explanation?

Secondly, this particular dome needs a wider view - less then 3.4 mm. Is there a lens or camera I could replace the current unit with?

The camera looks like a Hitachi model, probably vk-s series. I am clueless about how the RS232 cameras work, but I assume it works alone and communicates with the dome.

I'm sure I would sacrifice zoom for wide angle, but it is needed in this case. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,

Lou

Lou, are you referring to American Dynamics Ultra VIII dome by any chance?

CCTV S,

Yes, although AD refers to it as "8", the previous models were designated with Roman numerals. So the "Ultra 8" is technically the same as an "Ultra VIII".

Do you think it is possible to use a lens over the camera to get a wider shot? My thoughts are of a contact like Fresnel type lens over the existing camera lens.

Lou, it is an excellent question, but I don't think you will like my answer... If you had a chance to view the internals of this dome, you can confirm how tight everything is installed and for a good reason.. any deviation from its present setup could cause the system to, well, not work right.. We attempted several time to play with this dome by changing lenses, etc.. and always run into a glitch that AD refused to help to correct... so, it was a costly, yet realistic test that was conclusive at least to us not to play around with its camera/lens placement... (internal belts alignments are very crucial to how these camera and lens combination really works).

Besides, if this product is in warranty, changing the lens also will void such warranty... and then you have a pile of silicon junk with an optics that works as a basic fixed camera

You're right. I guess installing a panoramic mirror very close to the dome may get the job done.I'll give it a preset and maybe a PIR motion sensor alarm input.

Any guesses on the temperature readings? Do I need to initiate the dome to calibrate this?

Thanks,

Lou

Yes, please initiate the dome to restart or go home... this should reset most of everything unless you already programmed certain patterns or sequences... You also can do a complete hardware reset that should take you to factory default... and the chances are very good that tinkering with this dome could have caused certain electronics parts within the internal boards to act up.. thus causing the temperature to rise... as they are working extra hard to perform a task, even though you may not be using such task.

We learned very expensive lessons when we worked with this, as well as the previous domes, the matrix switches and even their Intellex platforms... At one point, we are able to fully understand and to repair or modify such platforms, but for ULTRA 8, well, not yet...
