Remote viewing a DVR without a router???

Recommended Posts

Maybe someone can help me out here. I have one DVR hooked up with a

router in one location and that one works great. Thanks to the people

here who helped me out with that. Now I have a second DVR with no

router. This location has no computer. So the modem is straight into the

DVR. I setup the modem with a laptop and was getting internet, so I know

the modem is working. In the DVR setup menu where the gateway goes

do I need to input the IP of the modem????? Do I need to do anything with

the subnet mask or the madeup IP address of the DVR?? Any help would

be great. Thanks to all, Christian

You should be able to set the DVR to DHCP and those settings will be made for you.

Otherwise, set the gateway to the modem's address and the netmask to whatever the modem is set for, often 255.255.255.0 or 255.0.0.0

You only need 1 router -It may have switchports 4 or so you can use them or by a switch say 4or 8 port -crossover lead If you use one

All network settings in the DVR should be that which the ISP gives you if using a static IP. If you want to use DDNS then you will need a router.

Then again, it depends on your modem and ISP, and ofcourse the DVR.

Also as mentioned if just using DHCP then it will probably work like that but your IP will change.

Please help us help you.

Do you have a Static Ip Address from your Service Provider

Is the IP Address provided by the modem static or dynamic

What brand / model Modem do you have?

What brand / model DVR do you have?

If you have a static or dynamic ip address from your service provider and a dynamic from your modem, plug it in, set it to DHCP, and your set.

If you have a static or dynamic ip ip address from your service provider and a static ip address from your modem, plug it in, add your ip address, gateway address, subnet mask, and dns information.

If you have a dynamic ip address, you have one more step, you need your DDNS provider. If you provide us with the brand / model of the DVR & Modem we can help you with that. Some DVRS have built in DDNS support, some modems have built in DDNS support, but depends on the brands.

Best of Luck!

A router only allows multiple computers to share a single network connection (modem), so you don't need it here.

Your modem appears to be handing out addresses via DHCP if you plugged in your laptop and it worked.

You should be able to set your DVR to DHCP (otherwise known as "Automatically assign a network address") and it will be online.

As others have mentioned, though, unless you specifically have a static IP address provided by your cable/DSL provider, your IP address will change. This is where the dynamic DNS services come in.

Alternately you can call your ISP and tell them you need a Static IP address... if they don't charge too much for it this is the easiest way. They will then give you all the IP address, gateway, subnet information you need to put into your DVR to make it work.
